Lizard Power Animal Symbol Of Dreaming And Conservation

By Ina Woolcott

Through myth and legend Lizard is associated with the dream time. When we dream, we imagine different futures and decide which we will materialise. Dreams contain some of the subtlest perceptions of the mind of which we may not be conscious.

Lizard helps us see the importance of respecting and remembering our dreams. Lizard medicine is the companion of every day waking reality, where our dreams are studied before they are manifested physically. Pay attention to your dreams, as they reveal to us what we are not aware of when we are awake. Dreams show us our fears and desires. It is suggested that you keep a journal of your dreams, to be studied. Especially the symbolic and recurring ones, lizard shows us hidden messages in the dream state.

If Lizard is your power animal, heed your own intuition before anyone else’s. Lizard will aid you in becoming more detached from situations in your life. Now and again it is required to be detached, to separate yourself from others, to succeed in what is necessary. Lizard will also show you how to leave the past in the past! To move on and quit being attached to what has been. Lizard is proposing immediate change in one or more areas of your life. You may need to let go of old ideas, patterns, belief systems, habits, actions or lifestyle because the old may threaten you in some way now. It is time to let go. Lizard prompts the need to go within and examine your present reality and then, move with confidence and utmost assuredness into a new chapter of your life.

One of the most interesting traits of the lizard is the ability to break off their tails to escape predators. The tail is left behind writhing, to take the predators attention off them, in order to flee. However, they are only able to perform this feat once, as the new tail which grows to replace the old one consists of cartilage instead of vertebrae. Lizards power lies in the quality of being able to rescue himself from danger by leaving a part of himself behind. As lizard only has the ability to lose his tail once, you need to make any choices wisely as the consequences may be experienced for a very long time hereafter!

Lizards are very sensitive to vibrations from the ground, they are adept at subtle perception. They have amazing hearing capacity, and with their sharp eyes they are able to sense the most minute of movements. If lizard is your power animal, you have the ability to utilize all aspects of psychic perception.

The psychic characteristics to be found in the lizard teaches us how to awaken our abilities by choosing one path over another that honour every part of our lives. Lizard is a powerful power animal to have, revealing your weaknesses, your strengths and prompting the energy of change.

  1. Today I left a church that I had attended for the first time. On my way to this service I had thoughts of a friend of mine who owes me money. I was thinking of how to approach this person who has avoided me for the past 2 years. The sermon today was by a Jewish Christian Psychiatrist who was speaking on forgiveness and deliverance. He spoke to my heart. Of course I went up to the stage after to be prayed for. That all the past wounds and wrongs done me were to be removed. Tears flowed as well as other facial bodily fluids, TOO MUCH INFORMATION, but it was moving to say the least. As I was driving away from the church, I was stopped at the closest stop sign, where I saw a pure white lizard. Big, Big, lizard. To avoid from running over this incredible symbolic creature, I paused in the middle of the intersection. The white lizard approached my vehicle and hid beneath my car. Traffic was stopped. It was as if, he knew I was protecting him. Upon observing him crawling to safety, I noticed other drivers respecting the lizards right to maneuver his way back to the desert. It was awesome. Once I got home I looked up what the symbolism of the lizard meant. Letting go of the past that keeps us stuck. Re-establishing how we perceive ourselves as survivors not victims. Forgiveness, redemption and self love is what this day has represented. Thank GOD for divine intervention.

    1. I just want to say that I so resonate to your experience. In the last three weeks or so my life has crumbed in many areas. Yesterday I stepped in my kitchen and fund a small lizard on the floor. Never happened before! It was brought in by my cat and unfortunately it was no longer alive although fully intact. The way I thought of it was that that little animal risked and lost its life to a natural little predator to bring me a message. It is right on tr

  3. Thanks for this wisdom. I have felt very connected to lizards since a tiny baby lizard found its way into my home 15 hrs ago. Since then, I’ve seen many, many lizards. I love seeing them do push-ups on a rock in the sun ! What you wrote here really helps me to understand the ones that I have seen recently and there meaning. I need to protect myself and have better boundaries, particularly around one relationship with my daughter’s friend’s family who have a lot of needs, financially.

  6. Hi, so I’ve been wondering about something related to lizards and reptiles since about 1988 when I first took LSD in 9th grade. I had no idea what to expect, I was lying in my bed alone and staring at the ceiling just waiting for something to happen. From a crack in my ceiling, I suddenly saw a white alligator appear to separate himself from the ceiling. Where the crack was, he appeared to stretch his neck as if trying to achieve separation from the flat ceiling. The rest of the body filled in as a sort of filmy substance, built out of shadow and mindstuff, I guess, but looked thoroughly three-dimensional. Or rather, like a two-dimensional alligator separating from the flat world of the ceiling into the three-dimensional world of space. At first, I was startled and for a moment afraid it was going to come chasing after me and then I would possible run out into the living room screaming and my very religious mother would know I was on drugs.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw squirming and I looked away from the ceiling to the wall and saw that my “burlap” patterned wallpaper had now taken on the form of several interlocked lizards slowly walking upward toward the ceiling at a slow pace and with a bit of a dance. They were walking in unison, interlocking in some fuzzy way I could not see clearly, and seemed to be doing so to a happy beat. There was a squiggly sort of dance quality to it. They looked happy and seemed to be celebrating their appearance as well as staying firmly put where they were.

I looked back to the alligator on the ceiling and noticed he was not really trying to separate from the ceiling to come and get me, but seemed to just be throbbing to the same beat, he was sort of bobbing his head where the crack on the ceiling was, not struggling to separate himself anymore.

My initial fear quickly gave way to delight and I realized I was in no danger. While I prepared myself for the experience, I had alleviated my fears by continually reminding myself that this was “only a drug” and would wear off by morning. In this instant, however, I no longer felt that way. I felt like these were real creatures and they were welcoming to this new world. Instantly, I just naturally fell into the belief that LSD showed a new world “beyond the veil.” It actually took me several years to go back to the opinion that LSD is just a drug which has an obvious and measurable affect on one’s perception. I only came back to this realization after tripping 100+ times over the course of 5 or 6 years and finally exhausting everything it had to show me. It no longer seemed filled with more surprises, as I’d taken as much as possible and seen all the different plateaus including “ego death”, complete dissolution and all that. These high-level experiences pretty much seemed to ruin me to the lesser wonders of LSD. Once my mind was totally obliterated and I found myself floating in space in some supernatural inexplicable way, seeing things squiggle per usual seemed boring. It just seemed like an alternative reality not much different from ordinary reality.

I also took peyote once and saw a giant golden snake wrapped around a tree who appeared to me as friendly and welcoming me to that “peyote world” as well.

My point is that the lizard or reptile was there from the beginning and always struck me as important and meaningful, but I never did figure out why or what it might mean. Over the years, I would learn about lizards in different mystical traditions and I would always stop and ask myself if that is what I experienced. Were they sylphs? Were they naga?

Even now, some 20 years later, after I have basically written it off as a ‘drug experience’ I know the truth is that I don’t really believe that. To me, there seems something significant about the alligator, the lizards and the snake. They were bigger-than-life monumental and momentous experiences that conveyed some kind of deep meaning and yet I never knew what it was. Certainly, after the first LSD experience, my entire worldview and attitude changed for the better. After the snake, I don’t recall what happened. I don’t think anything major, as I was pretty used to the psychedelic experience at that point, although it was my first and only time taking peyote.

What do you think this all means? Is the lizard my “power animal?”

  7. It’s 1 am and I am in a completely deep sleep in my bed room. Tonight is the first night in a while I actually stopped studying and went out to play soccer so I was more tired than usual, hence the deep sleep. Nothing could wake me up. I then started dreaming and in my dream an animal of a cat or some sort was telling me that there was a presence behind me watching me, not in a bad way. I turned the light on and looked over at my wall and there was a white gecko staring at me on my wall. After much research I found the symbolism behind this gecko. Is apparently good luck to have a white gecko in your house as they represent change and new beginnings and leading the past in the past as well as not making the same mistake twice. What I also found that was very interesting was that the white geckos are also known as dream keepers and I think the gecko reached out to me through my dream to communicate and send this message of change and that change is good. Just thought you all should know to accept the white gecko you may see!

  8. For the second day in a row I have seen the same lizard scurrying in the same place in my garage.I know it is my sign about letting go of the past and trusting the future. Letting go of old useless objects and clutter.Embracing my new life unfettered.

  9. I awakened a little earlier than usual this morning due to my cat playing the piano. (silly kitty) Out of my peripheral in the pre dawn darkness I noticed a shape above my bedroom door. Too sleepy to move I tried to make sense of it. After some time and quite a few guesses in the shadows and finally, a lamp, it was a tiny lizard looking right back at me! And now I’m here with a deeper understanding for the day, the week, the year. Thank you. 🙂

  10. Does it matter what sort of lizard it is that you dream of. Surely, they cannot all have the same meaning? Or am I just reading too much into is? Greetings from Zambia, by the way.

  11. Thank you ? beautiful words, very informative. What if my poweranimal is a two-headed lizard? I have never read about two-headed lizard symbolism and searched for it for years.

  12. Thank you so much! We just moved to Texas from Washington state and before our move I had some new power animals introduce themselves in a meditation and just recently came to understand what and why they changed and now I’ve had more coming from Dragonfly to Lizard and am reading up on them. This really made sense to me because lizard came to me while I was meditating floating on my swimming pool and I quickly swam over to shoo him out so he wouldn’t get hurt from the salt water. We already lost a sweet frog. I just wanted to thank you very much for your time!

  13. I had the most bizarre dream last night. I dreamed I was on some some of circular stone glyph with symbols all around it. The glyph felt like some sort of altar and dancing around the outside were some very tall human sized gecko type creatures who danced around stood on their back legs and tail while swaying backwards and forwards. Thoroughly odd. Not my usual sort of rubbish dream at all.
